Un olivier est visible sur la place de l\u2019Ormeau, au centre du village de Ramatuelle (Var). Bien qu\u2019install\u00e9 en 1985, cet arbre est presque centenaire. Cette figure famili\u00e8re m\u2019int\u00e9resse plus particuli\u00e8rement depuis un deuil v\u00e9cu en 2015, apr\u00e8s avoir retrouv\u00e9 deux photographies prises par mon p\u00e8re ; celles-ci montrent l\u2019enfant que j\u2019\u00e9tais en 1966 dans et devant l\u2019ormeau qui occupait encore la place de l\u2019olivier actuel. La vie du village s\u2019organisait autour de ce vieil arbre creux plant\u00e9 vers 1598 sous Henri IV, sur recommandation de Sully \u00e0 la fin des guerres de religion. Ce symbole de tol\u00e9rance et de libert\u00e9 est mort de la graphiose comme la quasi-totalit\u00e9 des ormeaux au XXe si\u00e8cle, et il a finalement \u00e9t\u00e9 abattu en 1983. \u00c0 chaque retour \u00e0 Ramatuelle depuis 2015, son image r\u00e9miniscente et fantomatique se superpose pour moi \u00e0 celle de l\u2019olivier dress\u00e9 sur une place qui porte le nom d\u2019un autre arbre. Dans l\u2019olivier vit la m\u00e9moire de l\u2019ormeau. Cette s\u00e9dimentation mentale m\u2019a conduit \u00e0 enqu\u00eater sur celle du monument v\u00e9g\u00e9tal disparu, et \u00e0 r\u00e9unir de nombreux documents et t\u00e9moignages de ceux qui l\u2019ont connu. Entre r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et fiction, la s\u00e9rie de dessins pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e dans l\u2019exposition Essences propose un portrait transtemporel de l\u2019ormolivier<\/em><\/a>, un arbre imaginaire hybride. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An olive tree can be seen in the Place de l’Ormeau, in the centre of the village of Ramatuelle (Var). Although it was planted in 1985, this tree is almost a hundred years old. This familiar figure has been of particular interest to me since a bereavement I suffered in 2015, when I found two photographs taken by my father\u00a0; they show the child I was in 1966 in and in front of the elm tree that still occupied the place of the present olive tree. Village life revolved around this old hollow tree, planted around 1598 under Henri IV, on the recommendation of Sully at the end of the Religious Wars. This symbol of tolerance and freedom died of graphiosis like almost all elm trees in the 20th century, and was finally felled in 1983. Every time I return to Ramatuelle since 2015, its ghostly, reminiscent image is superimposed on that of the olive tree standing in a square named after another tree. In the olive tree lives the memory of the elm tree. This mental sedimentation led me to investigate the memory of the vanished plant monument, and to gather numerous documents and testimonies from those who knew it. Somewhere between reality and fiction, the series of drawings presented in the Essences exhibition offers a transtemporal portrait of the ormolive tree, an imaginary hybrid.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
